ESTA Comments on East of England Plan
Story date: 20/02/2005

ESTA had sent a submission to the East of England Regional Assembly on the Regional Transport Strategy of their East of England Plan. In the submission, ESTA Secretary Rod Lock calls for doubling of the frequency of trains on the Norwich - Lowestoft and Lowestoft - Ipswich lines, both of which have seen a growth in usage in recent years. "Investment to improve the infrastructure is needed, and this would be in line with the stated objectives of the Plan," he states. The ESTA document also recognises that many journeys which start or finish on the East Suffolk Line are made by passengers as part of a much longer journey. Therefore it is important to improve the network with an East/West Rail Link from Cambridge to Bedford, Milton Keynes and Oxford; and a direct link from Braintree to Stansted Airport. This will open up many new journey possibilities without the need to travel via London. From 2007, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link to St Pancras should be operating and at that stage it is important that more trains from Lowestoft to London call at Stratford International.
