Lowestoft station is ideally placed for the pedestrianised shopping street and the South Beach. Indeed, it was the railway which led to the growth of the town as a port and resort. The distinctive East Point Pavilion houses the Tourist Information Office where you can obtain leaflets on the many attractions. The beach has won awards and stretches over two miles to Pakefield, past imposing seafront houses some of which date from the time of Sir Samuel Morton Peto, the Victorian developer. Take a town bus, or frequent Yarmouth bus, and alight at Belle Vue Park, to visit Sparrows Nest,a beautiful park not far from the North Beach. The Maritime Heritage Museum is open May - October and gives a good insight into the town's fishing and seagoing traditions.Tel 01502-561963.

Local buses will also take you to the East Anglia Transport Museum where you can ride on vintage buses, trams and trolleybuses at weekends and holiday times April -September (Tel 01502-386141)
