Southwold is a refined seaside town of great character, dominated by St Edmunds Church and the lighthouse, further enhanced since 2001 by the first new pier to be constructed in Britain for 45 years, 623 feet long, its landing stage welcomes occasional paddle steamers. The water clock and exhibition are among its many attractions. (Tel 01502-722105)
