Post East Suffolk Through Trains
I saw an article in the East Anglian which mentions changes across the EA netwrok. Seems our through trains are for the chop. Can we at least fight to save a couple, even if not all?

I would think the plan is move our 3 car 170s to Norwich-Cambridge

We get the new 170s on order (2 car) that just do Ips-Low shuttle

Electric units Ips-Liv St

A real shame as the through trains have boosted the usage of the East Suffolk dramatically. If messy changes are required people will revert to driving to Ipswich.

Post Re: East Suffolk Through Trains
Although I may prove unpopular for my views I think the withdrawal of the through trains has been inevitable for some time. To run a three car train on the busy approach to Liverpool Street is a waste of resources. If we could have 10 or 12 car trains it would make more sense. The ability reliably to join and divide trains at Ipswich (a practical alternative) seems to be beyond the capabilities of NEXEA. It used to be done regularly on the South Eastern division of the Southern Region and I think still continues south of the Thames.

I do make through journeys but not often. Changing at Ipswich would not be too much of a problem but the connections should be sensible and ideally cross platform (we need the lifts as well - and what about escalators?). I seem to remember EMUs (First Great Eastern) which terminated in platform 2 allowing a flat change to platform 1. They were then equally accessible for the up journey.

As one who uses the East Suffolk mainly within its confines I have noticed late running due to problems on the south of Ipswich section. A delay of 20 minutes may not be much on a London Lowestoft journey but it is a lot on an Oulton Broad South to Lowestoft run!

Any changes would best be made when the hourly service is introduced.

Post Re: East Suffolk Through Trains
Hi All,

I use the through train weekly from Halesworth to London and losing it would have a huge impact on my commute.

I've emailed our Waveney MP peter.aldous@halesworth.net to explain my concerns and I would recommend anyone else with similar views to do the same.

Is there any other ways we can campaign to save the service?

Reading the Passenger Focus research:

http://www.passengerfocus.org.uk/news-a ... p?dsid=393

It found that 48% of passengers surveyed on the East Suffolk line were traveling to/from London, it's clear this change is going effect a lot of people and make our region far more isolated.

All the best,
John Cleveley

Post Re: East Suffolk Through Trains
With regard to the Lowestoft - London through trains, at the recent ESTA meeting these were described as a luxury by the speaker from NXEA, who went on to say they were a good idea at the time (in 1999)! The track capacity into London is apparently limited, and the Lowestoft -London trains take up capacity that will be better used by longer trains. It appears that nobody in authority, our councils and MPs, will back any opposition to the withdrawal of these services. In fact the now departed MP, Bob Blizzard, told me during the consulation period that he could do nothing about the withdrawal of these trains (I still have his Email). According to the NXEA speaker at the ESTA Woodbridge meeting, the decision has been made to withdraw the trains and this will not change. For rail travellers from Lowestoft and Oulton Broad, the best way to London in future will be via Norwich and thereby avoid the often mad scramble at Ipswich when changing trains. East Suffolk line users from stations other than Lowestoft and Oulton Broad, will have to change at Ipswich and hopefully get a seat on peak time trains. ESTA has run a powerful campaign to stop the withdrawal of the trains but few people in authority seem interested, the main priority being the hourly Ipswich service. I for one, will be travelling via Norwich to London in future.
